Owner-Operated Catamaran or Classic Charter with Skipper?

Not every catamaran charter with a skipper follows the same concept. We show how a classic charter yacht from a fleet differs from a personally managed catamaran in terms of preparation, service, equipment, and responsibility.

Anyone planning sailing vacations in Croatia for the first time will come across countless offers

Modern catamarans. Professional skippers. Dreamlike islands. Crystal-clear water. Often even similar prices. At first glance, there seem to be hardly any differences in a catamaran charter with a skipper in Croatia.

This quickly raises the question: Are there any differences at all?

The answer is: Yes. And in some cases, significant ones.

Not necessarily regarding the boat or the sailing area. But primarily in the way your sailing vacation is organized and conducted.

While some charter providers operate a large fleet with many different yachts, others deliberately focus on a single vessel and accompany their guests personally. This is exactly where one of the main differences lies between a classic charter with a skipper and an owner-operated catamaran.

Both concepts have their merits. However, they cater to different expectations and create different vacation experiences.

In this article, we show you what these differences are. Factually, transparently, and without judgment. Because in the end, it is not about which concept is better, but which one fits you better.

The classic charter model with a skipper

A widespread concept for sailing vacations in Croatia.

Many charter companies operate larger fleets with various catamarans and sailing yachts. They coordinate bookings, organize yacht maintenance, and can arrange a skipper for the charter week upon request.

For guests, this model offers a large selection of yacht types, departure harbors, and travel dates. Depending on the provider and contract, the skipper is booked together with the boat or arranged as a separate service. Additional crew and service options can sometimes be added.

Which tasks the skipper takes over and which preparations remain with the guests depends on the specific charter offer. Therefore, it is worth checking exactly which services are included in the price before booking.

SAILING MANAIA: Owner-operated catamaran instead of a large charter fleet

Personal. Individual. Managed with passion.

SAILING MANAIA deliberately follows a different approach. Instead of a fleet with many boats, we focus on a single catamaran. Our Lagoon 47 MANAIA.

We accompany our guests personally. From the first inquiry and shared preparation to the last mile of the sailing week. This allows us to get to know our guests before they arrive and customize their sailing vacation in Croatia individually.

Our full attention is given to a single boat and one group of guests at a time. We do not operate without standards. However, our processes serve to organize your sailing vacation reliably while leaving enough room for your personal wishes.

And if you have no idea yet what your vacation on the sea should look like, you can rely on us. We take care of it.

For us, MANAIA is not just a charter catamaran. She is our own boat. And that is exactly how we look after her. With attention to detail, high-quality equipment, and the goal of providing our guests with the exact sailing vacation experience we would want to have ourselves.

The first day of vacation: Preparation and provisioning

Classic charter with a skipper

How the first day of vacation unfolds depends on the booked charter model. With a charter yacht from a fleet, the first steps are formalities and the handover of the boat. If a skipper is assigned separately, they take over the technical and safety-related checks.

Provisioning is handled differently depending on the offer. Some charter companies offer a pre-order service, while with others, the travel group organizes food and drinks themselves. In a fully catered charter with a skipper, the crew usually takes care of the preparation based on previously discussed preferences.

SAILING MANAIA

At SAILING MANAIA, we prepare the sailing week together with you. Two to three weeks before arrival, we invite you to an online meeting. We discuss your wishes, answer open questions, and plan the provisioning.

When you come on board, the agreed-upon food and drinks are already stowed away. You do not have to do any large-scale grocery shopping and can start your sailing vacation immediately after arrival.

A boat as part of a large charter fleet

Classic crewed charter:

Many charter catamarans in Croatia are operated as part of larger fleets. The yachts are not necessarily owned by the charter company. Often, boats belonging to private owners are operated and marketed through professional charter companies.

On a changeover day, numerous crews return to the marina at the same time, while the next guests take over their yacht that same afternoon. The schedule is correspondingly tight.

Between return and the new handover, the boats must be cleaned, linens and towels changed, technical checks performed, water tanks filled, and minor repairs completed. These processes are largely standardized in professional charter operations. They must be, so that numerous yachts can be prepared for the next charter week within a few hours.

The focus is understandably on a smooth and reliable process. After all, many yachts often have to be prepared and handed over simultaneously on a single day. In such a system, there is naturally less room for individual wishes.

The equipment of many classic charter yachts is also primarily designed for functionality and robust charter operation. This is evident, for example, in the tableware, linens, towels, and other items of daily life on board.

SAILING MANAIA:

The Lagoon 47 MANAIA is our own boat.

MANAIA is not a catamaran from a large charter fleet. She is our own boat. We want her to feel more like a small boutique hotel on the water for our guests than a classic charter yacht.

We spend many months of the year on board ourselves, sailing the same areas as our guests and experiencing firsthand what works in everyday life and where things can be improved.

That is why we continuously invest in comfort, equipment, and many small details that make the stay on board particularly pleasant. We know MANAIA down to the smallest detail and place great value on a reliable technical condition, careful maintenance, and safety on board.

At the same time, we have spent months developing a harmonious interior concept. With high-quality linens, fluffy towels, carefully selected designer tableware from Motel a Miio, and equipment where many details are deliberately coordinated.

Because we are convinced: Only the sum of many small details turns a catamaran into a place where you can feel at home from the first moment.

For us, MANAIA is much more than a charter catamaran. She is the centerpiece of SAILING MANAIA. And that is exactly why we treat her that way.

Water toys as optional extras

Classic crewed charter:

Stand-up paddleboards, Seabobs, wakeboards, or a powerful dinghy are not automatically part of the standard scope in many charter offers. Depending on the provider, such water toys and additional equipment can be booked separately. Sometimes at considerable extra cost.

Anyone wanting to make their sailing vacation in Croatia as active as possible should therefore check exactly which equipment is included in the charter price and which services are charged additionally before booking.

Especially with several water toys, the additional costs can add up significantly. A precise comparison of the included services is therefore often just as important as the pure charter price.

SAILING MANAIA:

Actively experiencing the sea.

Some simply enjoy sailing and the time on board. For those who want to get active in the water in between, they will find the right equipment on MANAIA.

Therefore, at SAILING MANAIA, several water toys are already part of the onboard equipment. Stand-up paddleboards (SUP), a powerful dinghy, and snorkeling equipment are included in the charter price and can be used by our guests during the sailing week.

For those who want even more action on the water, our Seabob F9 and the Rävik jetboard can be rented additionally. These water sports devices are our own and are not leased from outside. This means they are generally available when booked and are maintained just as carefully as our Lagoon 47 MANAIA.

This way, everyone decides for themselves how active the vacation should be. From relaxed paddling and snorkeling to significantly more speed and water fun.

We want our guests to experience the Croatian island world not just from the deck, but also in and on the water. Uncomplicated, spontaneous, and with the right equipment directly on board.

Collaboration and responsibility

Classic charter with a skipper

With charter companies operating larger fleets, communication often takes place through a booking office or charter agency. Which skipper accompanies the guests can be determined early on or announced closer to the start of the trip, depending on the provider.

If a skipper is used for changing charter yachts, they familiarize themselves with the respective vessel and its current condition before the start of the trip. How personal the preparation is depends on the company, the skipper, and the booked scope of services.

SAILING MANAIA

At SAILING MANAIA, we accompany you personally from the first inquiry until the end of the sailing week. Even before arrival, we get to know each other in a shared online meeting, discuss your wishes, and prepare the trip together.

MANAIA is exclusively operated by Werner or Tea. Both know the boat, its technology, and its equipment intimately. You therefore know exactly who will be accompanying you during the week before you even arrive.

With a private charter, a hostess can be booked as a paid additional service. With a cabin charter, a hostess cannot be added. You can find the respective included and optional services in our current price and service overview.

This continuity is an important part of personal service, clear responsibility, and careful preparation for us.
